Weighing In: Guess Who Got It All

A heathy breakfast really goes a long way. It's a shame I only discovered this late in my life. I used to skip breakfast and lunch when I was in my 20's and now I am suffering, changing my eating habits and lifestyle.

One of the new habits that I've incorporated in my life is to eat breakfast everyday.

I used to eat Kellogg's All Bran flakes daily. But nowadays, I eat breakfast on the way to work, so I prefer food that are easily held by one hand. I only get to eat it occasionally on weekends.

My normal breakfast would comprise of my one fruit (the banana), one starch (40g all-bran), and 125ml low fat milk.

I'd jokingly mention that this was my cardboard breakfast but in truth, I do enjoy my All Bran more than other cereals.

What is your favourite breakfast?

Weighing In: Blood Analysis

Well, there's no better compliment than the one I recently got from a visit to the herbalist and natural doctor. (Who incidentally my hubby kept calling "The Medicine Man").

I scheduled to have a live blood analysis done. I thought this was the moment of reckoning. I had been on a weight loss diet for a while now and have started eating healthily. Even stomaching green leafy vegetables which I've never touched all through my life until recently. I really think that it is always good to know if there is something wrong with you so you are able to fix the situation before it becomes any worse. Plus I wanted to see the fruits of my labour.

I am very chuffed to announce that the results were good. These were how my blood cells looked although this photo is not mine.

My blood cells were very healthy and well-oxygenated. Which prompted the doctor to ask if I was a vegetarian. I was floored. My diet was obviously paying off. Although I might not be losing the weight much now, I've still got good blood cells to show for it.

In the words of Mr Medicine Man, my blood was in stellar condition. And so was I, after receiving that news!

Weighin In: Update

After my hard work and hunger restraints (and occasional but much reduced cheats) brought on by my visit to the dietitian, I am proud to say that I am half a kilo away from my comfortable weight.

I must admit, it has been slow. I just can't seem to break through my comfortable weight. I need to lose another 4 kilos after that but I seem to be stuck here in this weight for now for the last few weeks.

Regardless, I am still quite happy I got to this stage. I am way better than where I was. At the first half of the year, I did not even know how the heck I was gonna start.

There is still 2 months left in the year and I hope to get to the comfortable weight by then. Even better when I get pass it.

Weighing In: Stepping Mad!

So after my gruelling post about the Stepper, you’d think that that was it, right?

Me and my beloved step (er, any step will do)

Well, apparently, I am a sucker for punishment, because I now proclaim that stepping is my favourite gym exercise. Although I must admit that I’ve taken a variation to the Stepper. I still share my ups and downs with the Stepper machine (hey, check it out! a little pun here). But what really gets my heart pumping for more is the Steps class that the gym offers.

My most used gym equipment

We are taught a series of stepping sequences during the class in which we have to remember and follow throughout. The sequences are all linked together and if you are attentive enough to the trainer, you’ll know just which foot to step when and you’ll never lose your step. As you go through the different levels, you’ll also learn more difficult stepping sequences.
I started with the classes because I figured I needed more help with the Stepper machine and so the classes might help to improve my stamina. And whoa! After attending a few of the advanced classes, I was hooked. I wanted to be advanced. I tried to keep up with the rest of them advance steppers….but just barely. Not to mention, all sweaty.

So there it is, my favourite gym pastime. You can surely get me to the gym faster if you mention that there’s a Steps class happening. Out of my way!

Weighing In: My First Bowl Of Veggies

What a momentous occasion! Who would've thought this day would eventually come? Definitely something worthy of a Guinness Book of Record.

The family went to a fancy restaurant for Sunday lunch and I decided to order my first green bowl - a salmon salad!

Okay, it doesn't sound much. But if you know me, you'd know that I've never ever touched green since I was a babe. And except for green beans, all cooked greens are instantly rejected at sight. So this was truly a momentous - I would even call it majestic - event.

I am on strict doctor's order to shape up or ship out. I have to do this. I have to do this. I have to do this. Now all I need to do is repeat these words a few more hundred times and I'll be able to convince myself.

Weighing In: A Visit To The Dietitian

Besides a callback from the Idols audition, I would reckon that a visit to a dietitian is right up in that list as something that would never happen in my lifetime.

After borrowing a friend's diet and succeeding in shedding a few kilos slowly, I finally relented that it was time I go get my own set of diet. And since my friend's diet was do-able, I made an appointment to see the same dietitian.

I sorta guessed already that I was eating the wrong quantities as my friend is built slightly different from me. I am a little happy to say that even though I followed the "wrong" diet, I managed to shed 2.5 kilos in 24 days.

My visit to the dietitian was enlightening to say the least. I did not neglect to mention that I only ate a selected few in the greens department. But the dietitian worked around them, and urged me to take a few more greens like lettuce and cabbages. I said I'll try.

My results were appalling. I appeared normal on my BMI calculations, but when she measured my neck and hips, she announced what I'd been dreading: I am obese although I don't look like it! I have to shape up or I will not know what hit me when I get to 40. Our goal is for me to lose a further 3 kilos to get to my comfortable weight. After reaching that, I am to lose another 4 kilos to get to my ideal weight (according to my height and age).

I got my own list of "diet" food a few hours after my visit. Boy, if I thought I was eating like a bird before, I'm eating much less now. So I am back to my first 8 days again with a new set of diet. I am happy to report that so far in 5 days, I have already lost another kilo.

Weighing In: New Feasible Diet

It has been a while since my last "weigh in".

I am hungry, er happy to announce that I am currently in the midst of a new diet. I do not know what this new diet is called. I don't even think it is valid as a diet because everything is on the menu; it is more like a plate, er play, on foods.

Be warned though that this is not (not yet anyway) my actual menu. I borrowed it from a friend, for whom this menu actually worked. She gave me the workings and I followed it for 8 days. And I must say, that the menu is eat-able. I have now made the decision to see the same dietitian (my friend's dietitian) to get my own proper menu.

The diet was that everything can be eaten but they all had to be measured and weighed before going into your mouth. My first 3 days were not too bad although I realised on the first day, when I weighed the chicken I was supposed to eat at lunch, that a 1/4 chicken is way, way too big a portion. I simply could not believe this at first.

So all throughout my 8 days, I went through the emotions of surprise, denial, desperation and acceptance. My 5th and 6th day were especially hard as my mind kept telling me I was starving. But the order of the day was just to sleep it off. And so I did and went to bed early.

I don't know if I'll be successful as it's too early to tell. But I can definitely see some promise in this diet if I keep going. In those 8 days alone, I have lost just over 1kg. And there are many more to lose. So wish me luck on this. That I finally stick with it.

Weighing In: Week 10 For The Food Diarist

I just realised as I pre-post this that on the day this post comes out, I will be sweating myself out at the Wits University examination hall, trying to burst an intelligent vein for my CIMA exam. Pardon me if I talk and scramble myself in between present and past tense. I am slightly not myself from all the late nights - eating peanuts (supposedly a brain food) and doing revisions.
I am hoping that my study techniques will give me a more rewarding result on my exam than what I have gotten so far with this diary. Yes, that is a tone of despair and disappointment. But no worries, I am not about to give up. Not just yet anyway.

Weighing In: Week 9 For The Food Diarist

So we start of another week with yet renewed faith. I wish I could feel all week like I do every Monday morning. It's true what they say that you must always start anything at the beginning of the week. I believe that. It's the ending part that remains hard for me. I always fall off the bandwagon somewhere along the way. And so, at the start of the next week, I am starting again.

With all this start and stop, I've also sorta decided not to continue the food diary in this fashion. It is just TOO boring to read. I think I will just do the updates on regular interval and blog about it quarterly or bi-yearly or something. I will endeavour that next week will be the last weekly food diary post till I have something new to report. :-) Wow! This sounds like the penultimate post, haha.

Weighing In: Week 8 For The Food Diarist

This week sees the last of the long holiday ending on Monday. And everything is back to normal. Or as normal as they can be. Battle is still there with the bulges in my midsection. Weighing In: Week 7 For The Food Diarist

This week we continue to be besieged with public holidays. The Monday and the Wednesday are off days for me. Not to mention that the following Monday (not part of this week's food diary) is yet another day to goof off. All I can say is.....yehey!

We are currently busy with the kitchen renovation at home and so if my food rations looked a bit erratic than normal, it is because it has been difficult to choose what fastfood to eat as nothing could be home-cooked.

Monday - workout - 2 hours step/vbox aerobics class at the gym (what a way to start!)
Monday - breakfast - 75g sweet thai chilli lays potato chips (and there I go doing bad habits again!)
Monday - lunch - brown rice and 5 pieces of medium-size butter-sauteed prawns
Monday - dinner - 2 mins noodles
Monday - snack - 100g bugles (very similar to potato chips, they are not good when eaten too much)

Tuesday - morning - dried mangoes
Tuesday - lunch - half of a strips and spicy rice order at Nando's
Tuesday - dinner - 100g potato sticks snack

Wednesday - morning - scrambled eggs, one sausage, mushrooms and brown toast
Wednesday - no lunch
Wednesday - dinner - 8pcs KFC Zinger wings and half a Magnum ice cream

I never thought I'd say this but I am starting to get tired of the takeaway food. I wish we'd finish the kitchen by now but our tentative end date is only next week Monday. More takeaway stories coming my way.

Thursday - breakfast - dried mangoes, Kellogg's All-Bran flakes with one banana and full cream milk
Thursday - lunch - Oreo McFlurry (???)
Thursday - dinner - brown rice, seafoods galore (grilled hake, grilled calamari tubes, 3pcs of small prawns, some fried calamari heads)
Thursday - snack - 50g cheesy snack

Friday - breakfast - Kellogg's All-Bran flakes with one banana and full cream milk
Friday - lunch - Nando's mild strips and spicy rice
Friday - dinner - brown rice and sauteed pork mince and potato (homecooked meal, finally!)

Saturday - breakfast - 3 cheese sausage and a KitKat bar
Saturday - lunch - 4pcs KFC zinger wings
Saturday - dinner - 3pcs KFC zinger wings and some green beans in soup

We were going to a christening party on the Sunday and so I planned not to eat too much.

Sunday - workout - 40mins cardio fast-walking
Sunday - no breakfast
Sunday - lunch - chow mein noodles and one piece barbecued pork strip and one piece barbecued chicken wing
Sunday - dinner - microwaved popcorn
I weighed at the gym and after 2 long weeks, I am back exactly where I started. I weighed my original starting weight. Here's hoping it goes downhill (?) from here. What I meant was that the weight should go down from here.

Weighing In: Week 6 For The Food Diarist

If ever I am to be successful, this would be the week........

The start of the attack of the public holidays is upon us. Meaning that there would be more time for me to hit the gym. Or it could be just more reason for me to lie in bed. Either way, out of the next 2 weeks, I would stay at home 8 days. Not straight-through, but nevertheless, the holidays are almost right next to each other.

Monday - breakfast - Kellogg's All-Bran flakes with one banana
Monday - lunch - a quarter chicken breast portion with peri-peri potato wedges
Monday - dinner - white rice and sauteed chicken and green beans
Monday - snack - 100g potato sticks

Tuesday - breakfast - dried mangoes

Tuesday - dinner - chicken macaroni soup (sopas)

Wednesday - breakfast - Kellogg's All-Bran flakes with one banana and full cream milk
Wednesday - lunch - quarter chicken breast and chicken macaroni soup (sopas)
Wednesday - dinner - 2-minute beef noodles
Wednesday - snack - cheesy snack

Thursday - breakfast - Kellogg's All-Bran flakes with one banana and low fat milk
Thursday - lunch - white rice, spicy fried calamari, spicy beef, roasted chicken pieces
Thursday - dinner - white rice, spicy fried calamari, roasted chicken pieces

Friday - breakfast - 2 fried eggs
Friday- lunch - brown rice and char siu barbecued pork (asado)
Friday - dinner - more char siu barbecued pork (asado) and an Oreo McFlurry

Saturday - workout - 1 hour step aerobics class
Saturday - breakfast - Kellogg's All-Bran flakes with one banana and full cream milk
Saturday - lunch - french fries only
Saturday - dinner - 6 pcs KFC zinger wings

Sunday - workout - 20 mins fast walking and 10 mins cycling
Sunday - no breakfast
Sunday - lunch - 3 slices of pizza
Sunday - dinner - beef fried noodles and 3 pcs sweet and sour pork

My eating habits continue to be erratic. Especially now that we are currently renovating our kitchen, there is literally no cooking at the house. At least I am getting the workout during my off days. I weighed in on Sunday and the gym scale tells me I am 0.1kgs over my starting weight. I was kinda hoping that I had hit lower than that but I suppose the weight is going the right way, which is down.

Weighing In: Week 5 For The Food Diarist

So I'm having a slower start this week than all the other previous week. I have not been updating my food diary everyday like I used to. I've only started on Wednesday and by then, I had probably forgotten what I had on Monday. Anyway, I am still trying. So I have to continue on.

Monday - breakfast - Kellogg's All-Bran flakes and low fat milk and one banana
Monday - lunch - a small chicken burger
Monday - dinner - 2 barbecued chicken wings equivalent to a quarter chicken size
Monday - workout - 30 situps on the exercise ball

Tuesday, April 12, 2011

Weighing In: Week 4 For The Food Diarist

So after the revelation that I am a bad weekend eater dawned on me last week, you'd think that this week would have me trying to fix up whatever was wrong with me. I don't know if I will be successful but we shall see.

Weighing In: Week 3 For The Food Diarist

After last week's misadventures in the most havoc fashion, this week promised to be good....or I had hoped to be good anyway. Wanna find out with me? Let's go.

Monday - breakfast - Kellogg's All-Bran flakes with low fat milk and banana
Monday - lunch - brown rice and sauteed sousou (sayote)
Monday - dinner - brown rice and 2 pieces pork steak
Monday - snack - 125g salty snack

I gotta get this salty snack off my system.

Tuesday - no breakfast
Tuesday - lunch - 6pc McNuggets and Oreo McFlurry
Tuesday - snack - 50g salty snack
Tuesday - dinner - brown rice and beef stew (nilaga)

I REALLY gotta get this salty snack off my system.

Wednesday - breakfast - 200g boiled peanuts and Kellogg's All-Bran flakes with low fat milk and banana
Wednesday - lunch - 2minute spicy beef noodles
Wednesday - dinner - 5pcs spicy wings and a fried chicken breast

Thursday - breakfast - 200g boiled peanuts and Kellogg's All-Bran flakes with low fat milk and banana
Thursday - lunch - chicken strips and spicy rice
Thursday - dinner - brown rice and beef stew with tomato sauce (mechado)
Thursday - snack - one mango

Friday - breakfast - Kellogg's All-Bran flakes with low fat milk and banana
Friday - lunch - chicken breast portion with peri-peri potato wedges
Friday - snack - 50g salty snack
Friday - dinner - 4 pieces KFC zinger wings

Saturday - workout - 30mins at the gym (a bit disappointed my step aerobics class was cancelled for the day. Just spent my time on the dread...er, treadmill.)
Saturday - breakfast - 1 scrambled eggs and 4 pcs of luncheon meat with brown rice
Saturday - lunch - 4 medium slices of pizza (2 seafood, 2 supreme meat)
Saturday - snack - 100g salty snack
Satuday - dinner - spaghetti with creamy chicken mushroom sauce

Sunday - breakfast - Kellogg's All-Bran flakes with low fat milk (so bare! horrors of horror. The taste was so bleh!)
Sunday - lunch - spaghetti with creamy chicken mushroom sauce
Sunday - no dinner
Sunday - snack - 100g salty snack (how about that? totally skipped dinner of a meaty substance and decided to go for an unhealthy snack.)

I did not get the chance to workout too much this week as my hubby and I decided to start our kitchen renovation and so most of our free time has been spent sorting out the cupboards.

Looking back, it seems like I only become a bad unhealthy girl when weekend comes along. I'd have to control my weekend eating habits in future.

Onwards with this experiment!

Weighing In: Week 2 For The Food Diarist

After last week's boring post, this week is even more dismal. Probably one of my worst week as I not only go into relapse, I literally come off the bandwagon. Started off so well when I went for that 2 hour gym session but it went downhill after that.

Monday - workout - 2 hours at the gym doing aerobics of all sorts (Zumba, VBox, Step, Funk Off)
Monday - breakfast - leftover pancit palabok and barbecued pork from previous night
Monday - lunch - 150g salty snack (Again. Can't believe I'm blogging about this.)
Monday - dinner - 7pcs KFC zinger wings

So it looks like I'm going worse as the long weekend draws to a close. I am sure glad that on Tuesday we will be back to normal. Although what is exactly normal? Feeling hungry all the time?

Plus, knowing that I've been naughty has made me even naughtier. Look at my menu...salty snacks? KFC? Really?

Weighed myself at the gym on Monday morning and sure enough, I am only down by 0.6kgs from my start-off weight. The 1.3kgs last Sunday was probably just a fluke. A very short-lived happiness.

Tuesday - breakfast - one white hotdog bun
Tuesday - lunch - one KFC breast piece + very hot potato wedges
Tuesday - dinner - brown rice and beef stew
Tuesday - snack - 100g potato stick snack

Wednesday - breakfast - Kellogg's All-Bran flakes + one banana + one plum
Wednesday - lunch - brown rice and beef stew (leftover, ugh!) + one Oreo McFlurry
Wednesday - dinner - 125g salty snack

Thursday - breakfast - Kellogg's All-Bran flakes + one banana
Thursday - lunch - 1/4 oven-cooked chicken breast portion + one plum
Thursday - dinner - white rice and pork tamarind soup (sinigang)

Friday - breakfast - 200g boiled peanuts
Friday - lunch - chinese takeaway consisting of roast chicken + spicy beef + fried calamari
Friday - dinner - same chinese takeaway minus the spicy beef

Saturday - breakfast - brown rice and sauteed mushrooms
Saturday - snack - 200g boiled peanuts
Saturday - lunch - spaghetti with creamy chicken mushroom sauce (2 servings)
Saturday - dinner - potatoes and 250g grilled rump steak

Sunday - breakfast - potatoes and 125g grilled rump steak
Sunday - snack - 75g salty snack
Sunday - lunch - 6pc McNuggets and some french fries
Sunday - dinner - potatoes and sauteed sousou (sayote)

So you can see....I have been very bad. Very bad indeed. Further, I have not been to the gym since Monday as my right leg has been acting up. Probably from too much aerobics action...or just plain lazy. Now what punishment can I give myself? (Although I think blogging about it is punishment enough.)

No weight report until my next trip to the gym scale. Till then.

Weighing In: Week 1 For The Food Diarist

This past weekend (Okay,  it would be the last weekend before this past by the time I publish this post), my hubby broke the most cardinal of all sins. He commented on my ever-expanding hips. This is of course, a slight jab at the bigger picture, which is my weight gain.

Now to tell you the truth, I don't think that I look all that bad although some kind of insecurity is already starting to creep in. I've been slowly gaining weight through the years despite all my efforts which is leading to my depression and frustration. And my husband's words did not help any to drive this insecurity away.

So again this week, I start with my watch.

I am watching what I eat. Again. I am feeling hungry. All the time. Again. Ugh!

Weighin In: Going Nowhere Slowly

It's been a while since my last post about weighing in. Of course, I'd like to blame it on the past holiday season to say that I have been away and had not been able to report back on anything. But the truth is, the past holiday season had only heightened the fact that I can report nothing back because nothing has happened. Nothing has changed between then and now. This year will be another year to try and be successful at losing some weight.

Not that I've gotten fat (or to rephrase, I meant I am not fatter than what I was). It was just that I thought going on a 2-week tour would help me with losing weight because it would lessen my time to think about food and I would be thinking about seeing new places instead.

But as I came back and weighed myself, the weight stayed the same. I'm not totally freaked out because people usually gain weight around this time and I am lucky (?) that I have not gained anything at all. But I am a bit frustrated. Still.

I expect too much of myself I suppose and there's just a lot of stuff happening right now that I am not focused enough with this whole weight loss thing. I eat too much. I eat the wrong things. I don't move enough. I don't move at all. I think about it too much.

Plus I saw some headers on the Yahoo News about some bloggers who have blogged about how they have lost weight. In a year. I'd like to do that too. OMG! Does this mean I do not have any willpower? Where do I find one of those fast?

Honestly, I don't have much to lose. I am only off my goal weight by about 9kgs. But if I lose 5kgs, it would be great already.

So I have to just find some willpower magic dust somewhere to push myself.

Went back to the gym last weekend and my bum is aching. I suppose that's a good sign now....

Weighing In: Last Two Minutes Before Assessment

My second assessment recently came up and my trainer had to measure me to see if I’ve had any changes since I first started seeing her. I knew this day was coming up and so I tried to do some last-minute adjustments. I tried to eat less on the week before the assessment. Of course, this did not work because I started so well on the Monday through to Thursday but on the Friday, I just could not help myself as I down a McFlurry, boo hoo hoo. With this knowledge of my bad behaviour the day before, I decided to attend a Step session at the gym on the Saturday, the day of my assessment. Before actually being assessed. Definitely some big last-minute stuff happening here. Worked out like hell.

After which my assessment came up. My final figures were:

I lost a whopping 0.3kgs. Whoopee??? Is that it?

Overall, my body fat went down by 1%. Total centimetres lost around my body was 9cms.

There is more definition to certain parts of my body but of course, my biggest problem is the bicycle tyres that I carry around my waist. (I am modest so I will not say that they are car tyres, lol! They equal to about 3 bicycle tyres though.)

Anyway, I feel a bit better about my weight although I feel my progress is slow. I will be 70 by the time I get my Jillian Michaels’ bod. Grrr!

I promised to abide by healthier eating choices again and more time at the gym.

Weighing In: Nomad Flab

Saturdays and Sundays nowadays meant gym days for me. I have always wanted to lead a healthier lifestyle and with not enough time during the week, I have resolved going to the gym on the weekends. Not to mention the additional weight is now really affecting my conceit (self-confidence if you ask me) and so I must start doing something or go mad!

I have been seeing my personal trainer twice a week for more than 6 months now and can swear that there has been a slight change in my body built (my pants have been fitting more perfect than before). No weight changes though, which bugs me to hell because I know those fats are just hiding somewhere else (my belly) if not my thighs. What a frustration to realise that fats don’t just roll in the land of my body, they relocate.

Which brings me to one of my favourite, and most pained, topics – weight gain....or is it weight loss? Whichever way, it has been years and my ultimate goal would be to stop gaining and start losing.

I am slightly hard-headed when it comes to eating veggies and regular workouts so this has mostly been an uphill battle for me. And so I start to document my ups and downs with healthy living and bad habits.

I declare war on you, my nomad flab! Take that, you! There is no turning back now as it is cast in stone....er, blogged I mean.

Hopefully, with perseverance, I shall prevail, this time. Of course, looking good is just a fringe benefit. The real deal here would be to live healthy and feel better all round. I want this to be my choice, my life.

Feel free to share me some of your success stories and advices........or frustrations.

P.S. I must admit that I am doing this all to satisfy my vanity. I want my Jillian Michaels bod. And soon.
